What is headless WordPress?

On a classic WordPress site, WordPress handles everything: managing the content and rendering it in the browser. In a headless setup, WordPress stays the management system, but the front-end becomes a separate, modern React/Next.js application that pulls content in through an API. The term 'headless' refers to decoupling the 'head' (the front-end visitors see) from the 'body' (the CMS where you manage content).

Your editors simply keep working in the WordPress dashboard they know, while visitors see a site that is delivered statically, with load times and security that classic WordPress simply cannot reach. WordPress keeps doing what it is good at (managing content), and a modern front-end does what WordPress themes are bad at: loading in a flash.

In short: you keep the ease and familiar workflow of WordPress, but gain the speed, security and findability of a custom-built site. The best of both worlds, without your team having to learn anything new.

Why we make this choice

Slow themes and heavy plugin stacks are the number one reason WordPress sites score poorly on Core Web Vitals, and therefore on SEO. An average WordPress page loads dozens of scripts, stylesheets and database queries per visit. In a headless setup that whole problem disappears: the visitor gets ready-made, optimised HTML with no overhead.

Speed. Because pages are generated in advance and served worldwide via a CDN, the site loads in milliseconds instead of seconds. Google confirms Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor, and faster sites demonstrably convert better, every second of delay costs you enquiries.

Security. Your WordPress installation is no longer publicly exposed; visitors only touch the static front-end. That simply shuts off the most common WordPress attack routes, vulnerable plugins and brute-force on wp-admin. Less attack surface means less maintenance and less risk.

Flexibility and future-proofing. The same content API can later also power a mobile app, a webshop or another channel. So you are not building a throwaway site, but a content foundation that grows with your organisation, without having to start over in a few years.

Who is this for?

Headless WordPress is ideal for companies with a content team that knows WordPress and does not want to retrain, but does want a site that is fast, secure and maximally findable. Think of organisations that publish regularly (news, knowledge bases, vacancies) and depend on findability. Many of our clients in real estate, consultancy and professional services choose this route: they keep the familiar management, but get the performance of a custom site. Torn between headless and a fully custom Next.js site? We advise independently, we build both and recommend what fits your workflow.

FAQ

On a normal site WordPress handles both management and rendering via a theme. With headless, WordPress only manages the content, while a separate, fast front-end (React/Next.js) does the rendering. You keep the familiar management, but gain a lot on speed, security and findability.

A headless WordPress site falls under our Business package from €2,999 (5 pages included). Add-ons such as multilingual support (€650) or a booking system (€750) are optional. The Quote Tool gives you an instant indication.

Yes, that is exactly the point: your team keeps working in the familiar WordPress dashboard. Only the rendering for visitors runs through the fast React front-end.

Management plugins (SEO fields, custom fields, form logic) keep working. Front-end plugins are replaced by custom work in the new front-end, usually faster and more reliable than the plugin they replace.

Yes. The front-end is delivered statically, which strongly improves Core Web Vitals and lets both search engines and AI crawlers read the content optimally. Speed is a confirmed Google ranking factor.

Typically 4 to 8 weeks, depending on scope and whether we migrate existing content. We follow six fixed steps from analysis to launch, so you always know where you stand.
